Checking Charco's
Charco's and Their Salad Bar
The food’s “Western Australian owned”, but don’t expect to be served Kangaroo meat either. Joining Botak Jones and Crazy Ang-Mo, CHARO’S is yet another self-proclaimed “Ang-Mo” food stall tucked in the heartlands. It is not entirely Australian, though. The story goes like this: The Singapore-born owner who has been living down under for a long time decides to bring his chain of eatery over there to our sunny island. Coincidentally, it is located at the same coffee shop where Botak Jones used to receive swarms of hungry people. Just like the Ang-Mo, they do things differently. Each customer is given a trophy-like Queue number stand and kiasu aunties will be happy to note that the BBQ, tomato and chili sauces are free-flow. Even on a weekday when we visited Charo’s, the crowd still seemed worlds apart from its predecessor.
First on our chomping boards was the Lamb Kebab ($6.50) which my dining companion ordered. It looks so appetizing that I stole a slice of Kebab. True to its looks, the smoky grilled lamb gives off a whiff of robust lamb fragrance that floods the mouth. It is complemented by the cheese, mayo-drenched lettuce and tomatoes wrapped in doughy pita bread. This is worth stretching those mouth muscles for. It would have been better if the lamb and bread was served warm.
Where is the chicken??? hidding amongst the chips
Next was Schnitzel & Chips ( $5.50). Schnitzel is essentially your very familiar chicken cutlet. The dish actually did not do much justice to its scrumptious display picture. Instead, I was greeted by two measly slabs of chicken patty which makes what I saw at the display totally out of proportion. Disappointing. The Schnitzel was decent, albeit a tad too dry and juiceless. The bird was coated in a fine batter of bread crumbs and seasonings for extra crunch and bite. It was served with starchy and creamy brown sauce and rectangular strips of fluffy potato chips. In short, its so decent like a good mama’s boy that its forgettable.
Where's the juice?
Our palates were spiced up by ¼ Grilled Charco’s Chicken ($5.50) [ they have it in Portuge style too]. Add $2 and upgrade the main course to more nutrition-friendly Slimmers Meal that allows you to choose any 3 salads (such us Caesar, Greek , Potato, Seafood, Egg and Coleslaw). Their signature chicken does not have Signature written over it. The grilled-to-a light brown chicken was too dry and sunken; it was as if all the juice was squeezed out from it. Even the ones at Cold Storage taste better. My dining companion swear that their chicken is tender and succulent. Maybe I came at a wrong time. However, the saving grace that finally put a smile on my face came in the form of the 3 salads. Zero in to the Caesar salad ; crisp, fresh lettuce tossed in tangy Caesar sauce and drizzled with egg and bread crumbs. Yummy enough to give the one of Coffee bean and Tea leaf a run for its money. It would be a (health) crime to miss the salads!!!
Salad galore!!!!
The menu offers a dizzying variety of Grilled Ribs, Portuguese chicken , burgers, wraps and sides like Roast Potato, Corn cob and Pineapple fritter and even the unexpected Biryani meals. So it is not that exactly authentic food from the land down under. You will be spoilt for choice, but choosing can get a little confusing as there are roast , cobba and cream meals and what exactly is the difference between Hawaiian and Portuge? Maybe it is high time that Charco’s introduce a menu with descriptions so that people will not be seen temporarily rooted to the floor and staring at the display menu with confused and dazed looks. Well, it is great for simple, chill-out meals. The meats somehow do not impress me – yet, but the Kebab and salads will not let you down! Worth a second visit.
